How to use different formats when inserting references through EndNote?
EndNote enables users to automatically format in-text citations and bibliographies according to various citation styles. It achieves this by separating reference content from formatting rules contained within separate Output Styles.
Users select the desired Output Style (e.g., APA, Vancouver) within EndNote or its Word plugin. The tool formats citations based on the rules specified in that style file, which dictate elements like punctuation, author formatting, journal abbreviation rules, and bibliography order. Consistency requires maintaining accurate reference data (authors, year, title, etc.) within the EndNote library. For specific deviations, individual citation or bibliography entries can often be temporarily overridden after insertion.
To use different formats, first ensure your EndNote library references are correctly filled. In Microsoft Word, navigate to the EndNote tab's "Style" dropdown to select your target format. Insert citations using the "Insert Citation" button; they will automatically format according to the selected style. You can change the selected style at any time and update citations/bibliography to reflect the new format. Output Styles can also be edited or downloaded to meet exact requirements. This standardizes referencing and significantly saves formatting time.
