Zotero does support direct insertion of footnotes into articles and documents. This functionality is primarily facilitated through its word processor plugins for Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs. Inserting footnotes requires using the official Zotero plugin within your chosen word processor. Once installed and configured, the plugin adds dedicated Zotero toolbars/menus, including an "Add/Edit Citation" button specifically for inserting citations, which can be automatically formatted as footnotes or endnotes. The specific style (e.g., Chicago notes, MLA) is controlled by your selected Zotero Citation Style (CSL). Ensure your document style settings within the word processor match the footnote placement requirements, and always verify generated formatting after inserting. To insert a Zotero footnote within a compatible word processor, position your cursor where the footnote reference number should appear. Click the "Add/Edit Citation" button in the Zotero toolbar, search for and select your source(s), then insert the citation. The plugin automatically adds the citation as a footnote (or endnote, depending on style settings) and formats both the in-text reference and the footnote/endnote content according to your chosen CSL.
