This is not a single research project—it is several.

A better version might be: "How does daily Instagram use affect sleep quality among first-year university students in the United States?"

Now the concepts are:

  • Daily Instagram use
  • Sleep quality
  • First-year university students in the United States

That is three concepts, and each one is clearly defined. You can build a search around these terms and find a manageable set of papers.

To test your own question, write it down and underline the key concepts. If you have more than three, you need to decide which ones are essential and which ones you can drop or narrow.

Can the question be answered with available sources?

Another test for whether your research question is too broad is to ask: Can I actually answer this with the sources I can find and access?

Some questions are broad because they require data that does not exist. For example, "What was the daily life of every Roman soldier on Hadrian's Wall?" sounds specific, but the historical record simply does not contain that level of detail. The better version defines the work arrangement, the outcome, the profession, and the industry.

  • Too broad: How does climate change affect agriculture?

The better version specifies the climate variable, the time period, the crop, the farm type, and the location.
