Who benefits most from swapping meat for plant-based alternatives?
The clearest health benefits appear in adults without existing heart disease who replace meat with plant-based meat alternatives. A 2024 meta-analysis of 7 randomized controlled trials (369 adults, 60% female, ages 24–61) found that substituting meat with plant-based alternatives for up to 8 weeks lowered LDL cholesterol by 0.25 mmol/L (about 12%) and total cholesterol by 0.29 mmol/L (about 6%), and reduced body weight by 0.72 kg (about 1.5 lbs) [1]. So while it's plausible that younger people or women might adopt these products more readily, we don't have data showing they get more or less health benefit from them.

This effect was strongest in people who ate below-average amounts of whole grains to begin with — for them, swapping red meat for whole grains cut cancer risk by 8% [3]. So if your baseline diet is low in fiber-rich plant foods, you may get more benefit from making these swaps.
The UK Biobank study adds a caution for people with inflammatory conditions or depression: vegetarians who ate plant-based meat alternatives had higher CRP and a 42% higher depression risk [4]. This doesn't prove cause and effect — it could be that people already prone to depression choose these foods — but it's a red flag worth considering if you have a history of inflammation or mood disorders.
