Transferring references from Mendeley to Zotero is a straightforward process primarily achieved using the standard RIS file format. This ensures compatibility between the two reference management platforms for core bibliographic data. Successful transfer requires having the Mendeley Desktop application installed and ensuring your library is fully synced. The RIS export effectively migrates bibliographic details like authors, titles, and publication years. However, user-created custom fields, extensive annotation content within PDFs, and precise group/folder structures generally do not transfer. Attachment files (PDFs) will need to be manually relocated and linked within Zotero after import. To execute the import, first open your Mendeley library, select the desired references, and export them as an RIS file. Then, open Zotero, choose 'File' > 'Import...', locate the saved RIS file, and initiate the import process. Finally, organize the imported references within Zotero collections and manually reattach any necessary PDF files located on your computer to maintain a functional reference library. This preserves access to critical research materials.
